Bible Study Outlines

Volume 2, Lesson 11
by C.I. Scofield

Christian Priesthood

  1. Every believer is a priest
In the New Testament, all believers are under Christ, the High Priest.
  2. The privilege of the believer-priests
Under the law, the holy of holies could be entered only by the high priest, once every year, on the Day of Atonement (Hebrews 9:7; Leviticus 16:11-17). Only the priests could go into the holy place (Hebrews 9:6). When Christ died, completing a never-to-be-repeated atonement, the veil between the holy place and the holy of holies was torn (Matthew 27:51), so that now the believer-priests have free access to God.
  3. The sacrifices of the believer-priest
  4. The intercession of the believer-priest
The New Testament priesthood is composed of Christ the High Priest, who has offered one sacrifice for sins forever (Hebrews 10:12) and is now interceding for us in heaven (Hebrews 7:25), and of all believers, whose sacrifices have nothing to do with [atoning for] sins.
