The Holy Spirit, Part II

In the Old Testament

The Biblical revelation concerning the Spirit is a progressive unfolding.

  1. In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit is revealed as:
    1. Associated in creation
    2. Striving with men
    3. Enlightening
    4. Imparting skill
    5. Giving physical vigor
      • Judges 14:6 - "Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him"
    6. Empowering the servants of God

It will be noted that all the Old Testament manifestations of the Spirir were according to His free and sovereign action. He came upon whomsoever He would. No way was revealed by which any Israelite might have the Holy Spirit. Today, in this age, the Spirit indwells every believer. This began after Christ's resurrection. The Old Testament had only a promise that at some future time the Spirit should be poured out upon all flesh (Joel 2:28). The fulfillment of that promise did not begin until Pentecost (Acts 2:16-18)
